SURFACE PREPARATION

  • General Directions:

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, grime, mildew and if necessary previous coatings. Treat any mould and mildew with a 50/50 Bleach/Water solution. Scrub solution on to the surface and allow to stand 15 minutes, rinse thoroughly.
After cleaning and/or stripping allow wood to dry 2-3 good drying days or until it has reached a moisture content of 18% or less. If necessary, sand surface after cleaning and/or stripping, finishing with 120 grit.

  • Interior:

New wood:
Sand with 120 grit to open up the wood's pores.
Remove all sanding dust.
Wipe surface with a cloth soaked in Methylated Spirits (Denatured Alcohol) or Acetone to degrease the surface and remove any remaining sanding residue.
Oiled or stained wood in poor condition:
Thoroughly remove all previous coating with DSP800.
Sand surface, finishing with 120 grit.
Remove all sanding dust.
Wipe surface with a cloth soaked in Methylated Spirits (Denatured Alcohol) or Acetone to degrease the surface and remove any remaining sanding residue.

  • Exterior:

New Wood:
Sand with 120 grit to open up the wood's pores.
Remove all sanding dust.
Wipe surface with a cloth soaked in Methylated Spirits (Denatured Alcohol) or Acetone to degrease the surface and remove any remaining sanding residue.
Untreated Weathered Wood:
Clean wood with NET-TROL to remove all loose wood fibres, dirt and other surface contamination. If wood is severely contaminated clean with AQUANETT or PREPDECK. Neutralise with NET-TROL.
Previously Coated Surfaces:
Oils: Strip with AQUANETT or PREPDECK, neutralise with NET-TROL.
Solvent (oil or alkyd based) finishes: Strip with DILUNETT, neutralise with NET-TROL.
Acrylic (water-based) finishes: Strip with PREPDECK, neutralise with NET-TROL.
Other finishes: Strip with DSP800.

Note: Woods high in tannins e.g. Cedar, Ipe, Oak, Teak will darken when treated with AQUANETT, PREPDECK or DILUNETT. Neutralising with NET-TROL immediately after rinsing will lighten and restore the woods colour.
NB: It is imperative that a contact time test is done when using AQUANETT, PREPDECKor DILUNETT on Oak, Chestnut and other high tannin content woods to avoid blackening the wood – Refer to the relevant TDS.
