PROPERTIES

OWATROL-ATG provides an anti-slip/skid surface for pedestrian and wheeled traffic, to prevent the risk of falling or skidding in areas with a severe slip or skid hazard.
Producing a more evenly textured surface than conventional anti-slip coatings where grit is sprinkled in to the wet finish, OWATROL-ATG penetrates into and bonds with the wood fibres to provide a finely textured, flexible, long lasting anti-slip satin finish.

Functions

  • Contains micro sized polypropylene wax beads (particle size 100 microns).
  • Protects and decorates. Maintains the woods natural appearance.
  • Easy maintenance - No sanding or stripping.
  • Good UV and weather resistance - Lasting performance.
  • Easy application.
  • Non slip finish for all exterior wood surfaces.

WHERE TO USE

  • Exterior use only.
  • Horizontal surfaces.
  • New or weathered wood.
  • Decks, docks, pontoons, steps, walkways...
  • Softwoods - Pine, Larch, Cedar...
  • Hardwoods - Exotic and broadleaved - Ipe, Teak, Bangkirai, Oak...
  • Planed and rough sawn wood.

SURFACE PREPARATION

General Directions:

  • Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, grime, mildew and previous coatings.
  • Treat mildew with a 50/50 bleach/water solution. Scrub solution on to surface and allow to stand for 10-15 minutes; rinse thoroughly.
  • After cleaning and/or stripping, allow wood to dry 2-3 good drying days or until it has reached a moisture content of 18% or less before applying finish.
  • OWATROL®-ATG can only be applied to bare wood surfaces or weathered surfaces previously finished with OWATROL®-ATG. ALL other finishes MUST be completely and thoroughly removed.
  • After preparing new or stripped wood surfaces, test wood for absorbency by sprinkling water on the dry surface. If water is absorbed rapidly, the surface is ready for finishing, if not repeat preparation process.

New wood surfaces:

  • New planed, smooth wood has a hard shiny surface called mill glaze that prevents maximum penetration and bonding of any finish; this should be removed prior to application in order to ensure proper performance of the finish.
  • Treat with DEEP CLEANER*, neutralise with DECK CLEANER*, alternatively mechanically or manually abrade surface with 80 grit paper (max). Clean off all loose wood particles.

Untreated weathered woods:

  • Untreated wood surfaces that have weathered longer than 12 months should be thoroughly cleaned with undiluted DECK CLEANER* to ensure that all loose wood fibres, dirt and other surface contaminants are removed. For severely contaminated surfaces clean with DEEP CLEANER, neutralise with DECK CLEANER*.

Previously coated surfaces (oiled, paint, stain, varnish...):

  • All previous coatings must be completely and thoroughly removed.
  • Oils and sealers: Strip with DEEP CLEANER, neutralise with DECK CLEANER.
  • Oil/Alkyd based finishes: Strip with MARINE STRIP, neutralise with DECK CLEANER.
  • Acrylic finishes: Contact us.
  • Other finishes e.g. 2 pack Epoxies, Urethanes... Strip with DSP 800*.

Note: Hardwoods and woods rich in tannins e.g. Oak, Cedar, Teak, Ipe... may darken with DEEP CLEANER* AND MARINE STRIP*, neutralising with DECK CLEANER* immediately after rinsing will lighten and restore the woods colour.

RECOMMENDATIONS BEFORE Application

  • Before starting, test colour choice on a small area. Allow to dry to determine final colour.
  • Cover everything you do not wish to coat, including plants and shrubs.
  • Do not apply in direct sunlight or to hot surfaces. Wood surfaces in direct sunlight can reach temperatures of 50°C (122°F) even when the air temperature is 30˚C (86°F).
  • Do not apply if cold and/or wet weather is expected within 24 hours.
  • Never stop application in the middle of a board or piece of wood, always work the entire length to a natural break.
  • After spray application, always back-brush or back-roll to improve penetration and uniformity of coverage.
  • Ensure wood is dry - max 18% moisture content.

Application

  • Stir product well (2 to 3 minutes) before and during application. Do not thin.
  • Apply a 1st liberal, even application in the direction of the grain.
  • Allow to dry a minimum 6 hours (20°C (68°F) at 65% RH).
  • Apply a 2nd even application in the direction of the grain.

Recommendations after Application

  • Clean all tools and equipment with white spirits while still wet. If allowed to dry remove with paint stripper.

Maintenance

  • Maintenance is due when the treated wood takes on a weathered grey look, has severely faded or the anti-slip is compromised.
  • Clean surface with DECK CLEANER*.
  • Allow to dry 2-3 days - max 18% moisture content.
  • Apply 1 or 2 coats of OWATROL®-ATG depending on condition of current finish and in accordance with the application instructions above, to restore the anti-slip properties.
